Herriot's stories may be a little difficult for today's children to really appreciate as he writes in a different time and place. What I like about them is telling my grandchildren what life was like on the farm when I was a little girl. I was raised in the states, not in England, but mty grandfather's small dairy farm was full of wonders for me. My grandkids like me to tell them about what the barns, shed, lofts, meadows and woods were like. In those days we were closer to the earth and the animals. There is much to share. This book has many tales and lots of illustrations.

Why I Choose this BookOur family got this book when I was a little itty bitty girl and who know how many childhood hours were spent pouring over this book and learning to love the art of storytelling through it's beautiful and enticing pages.Last year I bought myself a copy so that if I ever have a family of my own I'll be able to share it with them, as well. It's that good. What I Thought about this BookI think this will forever be one of my favorite children's books. From the paintings to the words choices to the stories that are told, everything is filled with a phenomenal amount of beauty. The whole book is like a piece of artwork.I'm pretty sure that some of my love for animals came from within the pages of this book. Often times during my teenage years when I had a goat farm with my brother and we would be up late at night playing vet to a sick or laboring goat I would remember the stories that had captivated me as a child and realize that I was living that life and it would make me happy.ConclusionY'all should really get a copy and read if for yourselves.RatingI'm giving James Herriot's Treasury for Children five stars and I recommend it to children of all ages.

Sweet book to read to your kids. The pictures are gorgeous! The stories are written as if addressed to adults (no talking down to the audience), but the subject matter keeps the kids excited about the story. Quality literature.

Born an animal lover, I read James Herriot's first four books in the 70's from middle through high school in Taiwan. Yes, Those books were translated into Chinese and James Herriot was quite popular among book lovers there. I came to the United States in 1987 and since then, I bought and re-read all his books in English. I discovered so many aspects of his writing could not be precisely translated into another language, nevertheless his love and affection for all living thing are universal. Later, I watched and collected some of the BBC adaptation and had to admit that even though they were fine production, they left you with little imagination. I still prefer the books and the audio CD's narrated by Christopher Timothy. Christopher Timothy's interpretation was very good on film, but even better on CD's.When the book "James Herriot's Treasury for children" came out, I could not think of a better way to introduce my nieces and my daughter to James Herriot's writing and the animals around him. The children love the stories and illustrations. But no matter how hard I tried, I could never be good at imitating the Yorkshire farmer's accent. When I found that an audio version of this book was available through Amazon, I was very excited the thought this would complete my James Herriot collection. However, I was puzzled that Christopher Timothy did not narrate this book. Not knowing Jim Dale's previous work, I was skeptical about the quality of his narration. Now I am glad that I was wrong.Christopher Timothy has been wonderful with all his work, but I think Jim Dale is more suitable for this book whose target audience are mostly children. There is so much feeling and emotion in his voice that makes the stories even more captivating than they already were. While listening to "The Christmas Day Kitten", I found myself sobbing at the end of story as if I had lost my own pet.James Herriot's books combine good story-telling, passion and kindness to every living thing. This book will do just that for your children. The audio CD will simply add more magic to his stories.

Great book. One of our favorites. Beautiful illustrations and wonderful stories. My kids (2, 4, 6 years) love it. Even my 2 year old enjoys it. I suspect it keeps his attention so long (which is quite a challenge) because the pictures are so gorgeous and interesting. We will buy more books by James Herriot. This would make a lovely gift.

The physical book is just what you expect from a quality hardcover - nice dust jacket, sturdy covers and binding, good paper with beautifully printed illustrations. The literature is a treat, of course. We read this aloud as part of our homeschool summer reading with my 6 and 7 year old daughters. This is the book that brought everyone to the couch to crowd around and both look and listen with great enjoyment!

I read James Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small at age six or seven, and I remember finding it dry the first time. I picked it up again in fifth grade and loved it. Because of that, I was apprehensive that four year old Mayhem would wiggle and fidget too much as I read the stories in this book to him, but he asked for two or three stories in a row. The stories are simple and just the right length, but are not dumbed down with childish vocabulary or sentiment, and the illustrations are beautiful. The stories and artwork both inspired further discussion, and we even went on to find a few books about workhorses after reading Bonny's Big Day. Most children delight in stories of animals, and I haven't met an autistic child who doesn't respond favorably to at least one kind of animal. I like to use animal subjects to introduce most of Mayhem's therapy activities, and this book will aid in that endeavor. It has become a recent favorite, and we are already working through it a second time.

All these stories are very child appropriate. The illustrations are on both sides of every page. My girls ask for these again and again. Some of the stories may make you cry.
